September 18, 2006 TORONTO - The Muslim Canadian Congress has expressed horror and shock at the senseless and vicious murder of a Catholic nun stationed in a hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sister Leonella, 60, part of an SOS contingent engaged in an effort to provide care and education to women and children in the hospital, was shot dead by gunmen on Sunday. She had been associated with the Somali relief effort for the last 38 years in a struggle towards the alleviation of poverty and illiteracy in Somalia. It is tragic that a life so pious, selfless and altruistic was terminated so brutally. Although the murder is still under investigation, speculation is rife that Muslim extermists, possibly indignant over the remarks of Pope Benedict lare responsible for the heinous crime as an act of revenge. The MCC is concerned that Somalia has fallen into a state of anarchy where Taliban-like Muslim militants have seized control over the capital and Southern parts of the war-torn nation. The organization is also saddened by the fact that Islam continues to be hijacked by extremists who, instead of inculcating tolerance, forgiveness, humanity and forbearance, are using the religion as a tool to consolidate politcal power and establish a theocracy. Instead of showing gratitude and respect for sister Leonella's life-long dedication and commitment to Somalia' dowtrodden, the extermists have decided to express their frustration and anger in the most bizarre and egregious manner. The MCC urges Somali authorities to spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice. The organization also urges Muslims across the world, and Somalis in particular, to denounce this senseless killing of an innocent person. |
