Rabbi Debra Landsberg
Temple Emanuelle
Toronto, Ontario

Dear Rabbi Landsberg,
I am writing on behalf of the Muslim Canadian Congress to express my organization's shock and sadness at hearing the news of the deadly attack on the Jewish Federation in Seattle, Washington.

Although it has been reported that the suspect shouted "I am an American Muslim," before he opened fire, the Seattle Public Inquirer has now revealed that the accused Naveed Haq had been baptized last year, as he had converted to Christianity.

The Seattle PI reports that the suspect "had disavowed Islam last year, converting to Christianity."

Notwithstanding the gunman's religious affiliation, there is no doubt that it was an act of hate committed by a disturbed man who translated his frustrations into committing a hateful murder and as such the MCC deplores his motives as well as his action.

There is no need for overseas politics to have any bearing whatsoever on the relationships of the of diaspora communities, both Muslim and Jewish living in North America.

The Muslim Canadian Congress is also urging North American Muslims to respect the law and refrain from playing vigilante to vent any frustrations or anger they might feel over the unfortunate turn of events in the Middle East. It is not up to individual members of either the Muslim or Jewish faiths to take matters into their own hands by committing acts of violence.

The MCC deplores the loss of civilian life in both Lebanon and Israel and is urging both parties to respect the call of the United Nations for an immediate ceasefire.

Yours truly,
Farzana Hassan
Director, Interfaith Affairs
